Hello Manitou Community,
We certainly have had quite a year! We would like to begin by offering our sincerest gratitude for all the work you have contributed that has helped us make our little organization what it has become. We consider this work as a collaboration and ongoing partnership with all who are part of the Manitou community. Our hope is that these combined efforts serve to help us all grow as individuals and as members of our shared community of learning. That said, we have some exciting things on the near horizon that we want to share with everyone.
First off, we will be changing locations as of April 1…no foolin’. We are fortunate to have Iyengar yoga teachers Francie Ricks and Pam Eyden joining our practice and work at Manitou. We are deeply honored to have these friends join us, as they bring decades of expertise in the area of yoga practice… and are great human beings to boot! We are moving to the current Winona Yoga Center (686 West Fifth St.) location for several reasons: there is easier parking, less activity, and in general more room for us to grow and continue to serve you and our community, as we grow into the future. We are excited for everyone to check out the new space! More details to come on that.
Change has that happy/sad edge to it as well. As we vacate the current space we built with our hands and hearts, we are grateful to our good friend and current landlord, Ed Hoffman, for giving us access to this space to launch Manitou and develop it over the past three years. Without that opportunity, we would not have been able to grow to where we are today.
Additionally, we are expanding our focus a bit. Here are some areas where we are growing in the coming year:
- We are bolstering our Zen practice and associated course offerings.
- We are offering our first Ango Period (100 days) of extended practice beginning mid-February and ending mid-May.
- Practitioners will be able to deepen their practice during this time and be able to formally take the Zen Garland vows with the visit of Roshi Genki Kahn and Roshi Genmitsu Kahn in May
- Trish and I will begin offering Dokusan sessions
- We will being to have regularly scheduled dharma talks open to the community
- Trish is continuing to grow the secular Mindfulness Project in the schools where she is currently in the middle of a full year implementation of curriculum at Riverway Learning Community. We hope to offer this in school settings around the region.
- We would like to offer Mindfulness and Well-being workshops to professional organizations in the area-if you know of interested parties, please send them our way!
- Paul is putting the finishing touches on our training manual for our martial arts students to give clearer goals for our students to shoot for.
- He also hopes in the coming year to have training videos available online for students to use at resources to bolster their practice at home. This has taken some time as he is a caveperson when it comes to working with this type of technology-it is still coming
- We are set to have our training move outdoors to the Levee again in May (weather permitting) and continue through the summer/early fall as we did last year.
- Our new schedule will begin in March. At that time our class schedule will be on Tuesdays/Thursdays-same time structure as our current schedule.
- Testing for our current martial arts students will take place February 15 and February 18.
In our planning, we are also at a place where it is necessary for us to raise our dues for martial arts classes for the first time as well. Beginning in March, we will raise our dues for our youth classes to $45.00 per month. If you pay for three months at a time, the total comes with some savings at $125.00 for three months. Adult classes will be $55.00 per month. Payment of three months at a time will also result in some savings with the total coming to $155.00 for all three months. Additionally, for families with multiple young folks participating in classes, we will continue to offer the $5.00 per student/per month discount. We hope this does not place undo hardship on any of our families, but the small increase will do wonders in helping us to make ends meet.
Thanks again for being part of the family. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to work with all of you over the past year. We hope to continue to grow in such a manner as to continue to be an asset to the communities we serve. We look forward to working with you and your families in the years to come.

One of the greatest rewards of embarking on a journey of exploration within any of the classes we offer here at Manitou is the opportunity to do some mindful, engaged growth. What we do is more than simply “work out”. The thing we are doing here is building sustainable life practices to shape the way we each interact with and within the various contexts of our lives. Whoa, what journey!
The premise is this. We are all the walking, talking contexts that we carry with us into all of the situations of our lives. Sure is a nice thought to have a sustainable handle on how that shifting context shapes our perception and how our perception shapes our reality. Why? Well, I think of all the days where I am “stuck in my head” not really interacting directly with my environment, but rather interacting through the veil of the mental baggage I carry into the day and project onto everything I perceive and interact with. At this point, you may be wondering…what does this have to do with Kung fu? Why try Yoga or Nia? Why take the time to meditate?
The idea is that each of these practices gives you access to a part of yourself. Perhaps, even more to the point, these practices give you the ability to fully access the physical and mental aspects of your being in a context that helps you to deal with the complicated relationship between self-perceiving self (ego) and the rest of what is…We don’t want to tell you what to be, or how to live your life. Rather, we would like to give you access to some tools that can be utilized to help you to be a better you…as you determine that to be. We welcome everyone and hope through our engaged community of learning that everyone is able to sustain meaningful personal growth and share that forward.
