Living Calm in the Chaos
Living Calm in the Chaos is a family program based in mindfulness (meditation), movement (yoga, qi gong, and labyrinth), body and emotional awareness (Focusing), and cultivating gratitude, empathy, and compassion for self and others.
Mindfulness in Education
Mindfulness in schools allows children and adolescents to learn how to pay attention to what is going on in their lives (mind, body, heart). When young people have the skills to manage their emotional and physical experiences, they are empowered to make healthier choices for themselves and act empathically and compassionately toward others.
Girls Connect brings girls together in a safe environment to explore themselves, their relationships, school, inspirations, and difficulties as well as other topics relevant to their age.
It motivates us to step up and ease the physical, mental, and emotional pains of ourselves and others.
It is accessible to each of us at anytime.
Our beliefs about compassion and how to nurture and live a compassionate life begins by recognizing that inside of life, there are obstacles: loneliness, grief, sickness, suffering, inequity, and misfortune. It’s easy (and somewhat natural) to want to avoid or escape these situations. However, if we can recognize these situations as part of the human experience, and not as a failure or something that we have done wrong, then we are able to be loving and present with ourselves (and those around us) during these difficult moments. If we can begin to shift our perspective and work first to transform our suffering into love, kindness, and self-care, then we are able to heal ourselves from the inside out. This bearing witness to our own misfortune is the essential platform for being able to understand and be available for others and their own suffering. This is compassion; the realization of our own suffering which allows us to understand the suffering of others and motivates us to work to help ease their pain.
Inside of our work at Manitou Center, we hold space for the difficulties that arrive inside of individuals, families, groups, and communities, with deep compassion. We act by creating generative spaces that support the interconnectedness of life and the inherent humanity of our shared existence. It’s big work, but work we believe makes for a better, more compassionate, healthy, and engaged world.

Trauma Informed Yoga Training
September 13-15 – SOLD OUT
Firefly Training consists of a robust, evidence-based, 30-hour curriculum designed in consult with experts in trauma, trauma-informed yoga, and body-based modes of healing. This training consists of 25 contact hours and 5 non-contact hours.

Living Zen Practice
Friday, September 20, 5:30 – 8:30 PM
If you are interested in learning more about Zen and how this practice translates into holistic human development within the context of your own life, come and explore ways of building your individual practice with the support of a welcoming and socially-engaged community.
Create Your Own Drum
Saturday, September 21, 9:30 AM – 3 PM
Making your own drum is a journey that you will remember for the rest of your life. “The drum symbolizes the heartbeat of life, the heartbeat of community. It is not simply an art form, but a tool for cleansing, centering, and focusing one’s intentions for health and happiness,” Wayne Manthey, drum-making instructor.
Equinox Retreat at Kinstone
Sunday, September 22, 9 AM – 4 PM
As the seasons change and the sun and earth align again at Equinox, there is also change and alignment taking place inside each of us. This retreat encourages us to turn inward and notice what we might not normally make time for in our lives.
Self Care for the Caregiver
Saturday and Sunday, October 11 – 12
Caregiving is an incredibly challenging role. Oftentimes, in the midst of offering care, compassion, and companionship to a loved one, caregivers find that they are stressed, fatigued, and burned out. This weekend retreat will focus on holistic self-care and ways to build resilience in the midst of caregiving.
Mala Making at the New Moon
Saturday October 26, 2019
2:00 PM – 4:30 PM CDT
In this workshop, led by Kim Hammer, owner of SUTRA global, you will create your own “wrist mala”, learn about the significance of mala and how to use them in yoga and meditation.
